How do I choose Porch Wall Tiles
Choosing the correct tiles for your porch is crucial. Besides creating the perfect first impression, they also help in protecting your walls from weather-related damage. To choose the best tile for your porch wall, here are the 8 tips that you should keep in mind:
- Decide a budget: As with decorating any space, it is essential to decide on a budget before starting the selection process for the material. Setting a budget will help you narrow down your options – just make sure the budget is optimised as per your constraints.
- Keep the climate of your area in mind: You should take note of the climatic conditions of your area while choosing the tiles for your porch walls. For instance, if your area witnesses sub-zero temperatures, ensure that you choose a frost-free tile. Similarly, if your area sees heavy rains, it is best to select water-resistant tiles.
- Play around with colours and designs: The porch area is one space where you can experiment with various colours and designs to create something innovative. You can opt for bright colours and bold designs for a vibrant space, or use soft shades for a soothing ambience. If you want something different from these two, you can also combine dark and light colours for quirky wall concepts.
- Strength:The porch wall tiles are exposed to harsh weather conditions like heat and cold. It is necessary to select strong tiles that can endure such conditions. Always check the material and specifications of the tile.
- Choose the right finish: Each finish comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. For example, matte-finished tiles can easily hide stains, but their rough surface can be a dirt magnet. On the other hand, glossy finish tiles are usually easier to clean but highlight each tiny smudge and stain.
- Check the water absorption rate of the tile: Another significant important feature is that the tile needs to have a low water absorption rate. You should thoroughly research the porosity of different materials before making a choice. Tiles that are low on porosity work well for rainy areas, as they absorb less moisture and prevent the growth of germs and mould.
- Continue the aesthetic theme of your indoors to the outdoors: Exploring different colours and designs for the porch is recommended. At the same time, it is vital to keep the interiors of your home in mind. It is best to ensure that the colour and design scheme is consistent throughout your home be it indoors or outdoors. For instance, if you’ve opted for a rustic look indoors, continue the theme outdoors too.
- Opt for tiles that require minimal maintenance: Since the porch is often a large and open area, maintaining and cleaning tiles can prove tiring with a build-up of dirt and stains. Ideally, you should select tiles that are easy to clean and last for a long time without regular maintenance.

How do you tile an outside wall?
Once you have decided on a wall tile, the next step is to install the tile on your porch wall. Here are the steps that you can follow to install a wall tile on your porch wall:
- Measure the width and length of your wall to calculate the number of tiles you will need. Round off to the next whole number and add 10-15% extra tiles to make an allowance for waste.
- Once your tiles have arrived, start prepping up your wall. Scrape down the wall to ensure a flat surface to work with it. Clean the wall using a hard brush and water to clean away all the debris from the surface of the wall.
- Measure the wall and mark the centre of the space. Use chalk to create a vertical line from the floor to the ceiling. Measure the height of a single tile and add the width of the grout to it. Starting from the top, move downwards and calculate the number of tiles that will be required to reach the approximate centre of the wall. Make a mark at that point at every few feet and make a horizontal line connecting all the marks. You can then start laying the tiles at the intersection of these marks and move outwards.
- Combine a packet of thinset with water as per the directions on the package. Use a thinset with added latex so that it is pliable and reduces the cracking of grout.
- Starting from the centre point, spread some thinset on an area of about 3 square feet.
- Lay your tile and press it into the mortar while moving it a little from side to side to ensure that it adheres properly. Add tile spacers between two tiles to ensure even spacing.
- Cut off the extra tile at the end of each column and row using a tile wet saw. You can also make custom cuts using tile nippers to ensure that the tile fits perfectly around obstructions such as windows or pipes. Make sure that you make only tiny cuts at a time lest you want the tiles to crack under pressure.
- Continue the tile-laying process on the rest of the wall while working on small sections. Start from the centre and move outwards. Lightly tap the tiles using a mallet to ensure that they are set firmly.
- Let the tiles dry for 24 hours.
- Remove the spacers from between the tiles.
- Prepare the grout by following the directions on the package. Spread the grout all over the wall using a grout float while holding it at a 45-degree angle. Spread the grout from all sides so that all the crevices are filled well.
- Allow the grout to dry for an hour, then wipe away the extra one using a wet sponge. Avoid pressing hard, as that damages the grout. After a few hours, you can buff the tile using a dry cloth to get rid of all the remaining grout.
- Once the grout is completely dry, apply a grout sealer to prevent water from seeping in.
