Be prepared well in advance before the monsoon arrived. Here is a quick guide that will help you fix your damp walls and clear the damp problem.

1. Identify the Damp Source

The first step that one must take towards this is to track the root cause of the dampness. Understanding the source, whether it is a leakage issue or a seepage issue, would make the job of finding the solution much easier. Some parts of your home are more prone to dampness and need regular monitoring. And the top of the list is the walls of your home.

If the walls adjoining the bathrooms and kitchen are damp, there is a possibility that the tiles have very minute gaps. Sometimes, there may be cracks on the tiles, which may go unnoticed. The other dominant factor for wall dampness is when the concealed pipes are broken or worn out.

2. Solve that ‘Damp’ Problem

  • When cracked tiles and expanded grout lines are pain points: In this case, it is best to fix the broken tiles or to re-conceal all the gaps with epoxy or white cement. It helps in protecting any seepage. So, getting the right quality bathroom tiles from credible brands is also a necessary step. As it increases the life and the quality of bathroom spaces.
  • When Pipes are the problem: In the case where the pipes are damaged, there is pretty much no other option than to fix the pipes. This could be long and cumbersome, not to mention a costly remedy to prevent dampness. An alternative would be installing a parallel, alternate pipeline and transferring the water connection. It would undoubtedly salvage the problem and not be as vast a process as the former.
  • When ceilings are victims of moisture, seepage and excessive water are logging on surfaces above the ceiling. For example, bathrooms with water storage tanks above could form moist ceilings due to overflowing tanks or improper installation of the tanks.

Depending on the cause, the necessary steps should be undertaken to prevent it from damage. Before installing the tank, cover the base with good-quality tiles to prevent seepage from the ceiling walls. In case of an overflow, cut off the water supply into the tanks at the best capacity.
