Exploring the Advantages and Disadvantages of Epoxy Grout in Tile Laying

Tile is a significant part of all modern construction. Tiles serve as a crucial element for all commercial and residential projects. Be it a tiled backsplash or floor, it offers an ultra-modern appeal to any environment. After laying the tiles, grouting is the most vital step. Nowadays, every good tile showroom lets its customers, like you, know how important grout can be for their tile projects and how it can impact the overall appeal and longevity of their tiled surfaces. In this blog, we will focus on epoxy tile grout – a new-age grout variant and how you can use it to prolong the lifespan of the tiled surfaces.

Epoxy Grout

Epoxy grout is a high-end grout type, thanks to its higher chemical resistance and ability to offer more flexibility than conventional cement grouts. That’s why it has quickly begun to replace traditional cement ones. Moreover, high-end epoxy grouts can fill the gaps between the tiles with more efficiency for long-lasting tiling with minimal issues. So, they are an appropriate choice for multiple domestic and commercial spaces. Epoxy resins and filler material, the primary ingredients of epoxy grout combine chemically to form high-quality grout material.

Areas of Application

Epoxy grout is a suitable grout material for tiles with low porosity, which does not allow water to penetrate the tile body. This grout material is not suitable for high-porous materials like natural stone or marble slabs as water may penetrate the slab and damage the surface. Besides that, it is more suitable for indoor tile surfaces. This is because the grout may discolour if it gets exposed to strong sun rays for a long period. That’s why if you reach out to a good tile showroom with expert tile dealers to buy tiles, they always ask where you want to install tiles – indoors or outdoors- to buy the right tile kinds and the right grout type.

Advantages of Epoxy Grouts

When it comes to a vital tiling element like epoxy grout, you should not overlook its advantageous features. So, here are some of the advantages of epoxy grout.

Sturdiness and Durable

The most significant advantage that is worth mentioning about epoxy grout is that it is sturdy and durable. It is made of chemically resistant material. That’s why epoxy tile grout is not easy to wear out, fade, chip, or fracture. It can easily stay for a lifetime.

Zero Mould or Mildew

Another excellent benefit that all aspiring tile lovers will love for sure is that new-age grout does not support the growth of moulds or mildew on its surfaces. Earlier, it was hard to tackle the growth of moulds or mildew, which was very typical of grouts. Thankfully, you no longer have to worry about that due to the innovation in grout chemistry. Good-quality grouts are non-porous, and that’s why they are so widely used across spaces, from dry areas like living rooms to wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens.

Stain Resistant

New-age epoxy grout is highly resistant to stains. That’s why it is easier to maintain them for several years. Thanks to their fuss-free cleaning needs, you can easily remove dirt and grime from stubborn stains from epoxy grout surfaces with just a swipe of a wet cloth. So, be it epoxy tile flooring or wall, you can retain its beauty for years to come in a hassle-free way.

Availability of Diverse Colours

Another significant advantage that deserves a quick mention is the availability of grout in diverse colours these days. So, you can let your creative side out and experiment with different grout colours to spruce up your tiled surfaces even further

 Disadvantages of Epoxy Grouts

The advantages of epoxy grout in tile installation are undeniable, thanks to research and technological improvements in grout manufacturing. However, there are certain drawbacks of epoxy grout as well. Here is some information about them.

  • Quick Drying

This can seem like both a benefit and drawback depending on what you are focusing on. It is often considered a negative character because of its quick-drying quality. That’s why epoxy grout is more prone to wastage. To avoid this, you have to work quickly and apply the grout mixture before it dries.

  • Mixing Proportions

Epoxy grout products come with specific mixing instructions. So, you have to mix the materials in the right proportions or you will end up ruining a batch of materials. So, follow the manufacturer’s instructions given on the label properly and mix the materials in the correct proportion.

  • Time-Consuming

Using epoxy grout can be a slower process than other traditional grouts, like cement grout, hence taking more time. So, be aware that your tile installer may charge you more if you wish to apply epoxy grout during your tile installation process.

  • Poor Appearance

Another drawback of epoxy grout is that it has a slightly plastic look, which may affect the look of your tiled surfaces. Also, it tends to turn yellow after a certain period, if it gets exposed to sunlight.

  • High Cost

Since the price of raw materials of epoxy grout is high and the labour charges are high too, the overall cost of applying this grout is higher than conventional grout.

Tip: As a preventative measure, while using epoxy grout, make sure to put on gloves and a mask because it releases strong gases which can cause distress if you inhale or come in direct contact with your skin.

Application Technique

If you want to use epoxy tile grout in your DIY tiling project, follow these steps to apply grout in the tile gaps.

  • Mix the epoxy grout and filler material as given on the label by the manufacturers.
  • Since epoxy grout dries quickly, keep your tools ready. You need to be very swift and efficient while applying the grout.
  • Now spread the grout to fill the tile joints, and immediately wipe off the extra grout with a damp cloth.
  • Once applied, clean the tiles properly. Wipe the tile surfaces with a solution of vinegar and water in a 50:50 ratio and remove any grout haze from the epoxy tile flooring or wall.

Tip: Make sure to open your windows during the grouting process to allow the released gases to get replaced with fresh air.

Conclusion

Hope you have now understood the role of epoxy grout in tiling projects. Still, if you have any doubts or confusion about where to use or how to use epoxy grout, connect with your nearest tile showroom in your city, and learn how you can create long-lasting epoxy tile flooring or walls in your space.
